FAQs
What is an out-of-network therapist?
An out-of-network therapist simply means that the the therapist doesn’t accept your insurance. In my case, I don’t accept insurance at all, but I do help my clients claim their out-of-network benefits immediately after each session through a company called Mentaya. You can try the benefits calculator here. By being OON, I am able to spend more time on the diagnosis process and on what my client needs.
What happens during a therapy session?
After we hop on to the video call, there’s often a little small talk and brief catching up, after that, it depends on the treatment goals we have set. For some it’s a conversation to process emotions and events. For others, it may include EMDR or play therapy (which is not limited to children.) I am not the expert on you. You are. So we will base sessions on your needs and goals.
How often is therapy and for how long?
While I have several clients who meet weekly, I often find that people settle in around every other week. When my client’s are in crisis or struggling more than usual, they may decide to see me weekly. Therapy typically lasts between 45-60 minutes.
Does virtual Play Therapy work?
When the pandemic hit, I was not a believer in Telehealth for therapy sessions, especially for kids. As I have continued as a virtual therapist for the past 4 years, I can honestly say that teleplay therapy has an incredible impact. I have consulted with and been trained by some of the best play therapists in the country, particularly in regards to virtual play therapy. While it may not be a good fit for all kids/teens, I have been privy to witness some incredible healing and growing through this platform.
What happens if we aren’t a good fit?
That can happen, and because the relationship between client and therapist is key to the healing process, it’s really important to bring up. If this happens, please let me know. I will be more than happy to help you find a therapist who’s a better fit, no questions asked. The most important thing is that you are able to have the therapy experience you need.
How does EMDR Work?
Simply: EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements back and forth, side to side tapping, etc) to help the brain store traumatic memories properly so that they don’t create negative behaviors or triggers.I have seen clients who have been traumatized or crippled with fear be able to live completely different lives, especially kids! You can learn more about EMDR here.
